Bruce Alford - 1951 Bowman # 79
Bruce Alford's 1951 Bowman football card. So far, this is the only card of Alford that I know of.
Herbert Bruce Alford, Sr played football and baseball for TCU from 1940-1943. He was an All-Southwest Conference Football selection in 1941 and 1942 and won the Rogers Trophy (TCU MVP) in 1942, the same season in which he was the Captain of the team. Inducted into the TCU Letterman's Hall of Fame in 1973.
He was drafted in the 8th Round of the 1943 pro draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, but delayed his pro career to fly in the Army Air Corps. He flew 35 missions and achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After service, he played for the New York Yankees of the All-American Football Conference from 1946-1949 and then the New York Yankees of the NFL from 1950-1951.
After his playing days, he remained active in the NFL by acting as a line judge and even working three Super Bowl games.
He was born September 12, 1922 in Waco, TX but later called Fort Worth his home and lived there at the time of his death, May 8, 2010.
